Malaysianspeak- Lah

Image
Definition: A Manglish particle used primarily at the end of sentences to affirm a point or statement. Also to add weight to a sentence not unlike an exclamation mark. Malaysian Usage: i) Ya lah ii) No lah iii) Economy bad lah iv) Petrol price down lah v) Go mamak lah vi) Virtually with anything Example: a) He's getting married lah. No more crazy nights out already. It's parenthood and Pampers for him now lah! b) Yeah lah, she's like that one. You can't save a damsel who likes her distress lah. c) Your fault lah! Who asked you to come late? Conclusion Lah is ubiquitously used in the Malaysian lexicon. Much like other Malaysian phrases or colloquialisms, its usage can be varied to signify diverse emotions, connotations or expressions. If you are unfamiliar with the use of Lah, observe how real Malaysians incorporate it into daily conversations before attempting it. Otherwise you run the risk of sounding obnoxious. Or French. Same thing really.

Keling! Keling! Keling! Are you Happy now?

Recently, incidents of school teacher’s physically and verbally abusing students of Indian origin have been on the rise in Malaysia, and in some instances, teachers even called the Indian students by derogatory names. The latest case is in SMK Darul Ehsan, where a schools teacher called an Indian student 'anjing' (dog) and 'keling’. In many other cases, Indian students were verbally abused, slapped, kicked, punched and caned by the teachers without proper justification made. I dont't know whether my Malay friends are satisfied when they are calling me as 'keling'. Why are they behaving so cheaply? I don’t surprise on the word ‘keling’, even until now my course mates (future teachers) are calling me as keeling as well. No wonder in school they are practicing the same words again and again. When I was small, my Malay and Chinese friends used to call my ‘keling’; in fact, they learnt the word from their parents and teachers. CIK RUSHITA (THE TEACHER) THE CASE THAT ...

Taboo for Malaysian Indians

Image
Humans tend to do many things including things that we can’t even imagine of. We talk, laugh, cry, kiss and so and so. But when the ‘culture’ of one human being came into the picture, there would be some rules that one should be and shouldn’t be, and that is what this article is going to be about. We, the Malaysian Indians, have our own set of ‘rules’ as well. These rules are invisible as they were set by no one, but automatically it would be perceived as “Shouldn’t’s of Malaysian Indians” and surprisingly until now, it is still being followed by many. Now, let me list down three (3) things that I believe, would be considered as ‘taboo’ for Malaysian Indians. For those kiddies, ‘taboo’ means some sort of a prohibition or a restriction. Please don’t take that word seriously as the things that I am going to list down will be things that will usually be observed by some nerd kiddies, kelevis, mamees, mamas and not forgetting our very own religious freaks and the condemnation that will be ...

5 things Aattam 100 Vagai should realize Written by Kalai on Monday, February 16th 2009

This issue is solely based on my opinions and how I feel about it. So the motive is to share some tips that Aattam 100 vagai team should take into count. Every piece of opinion should be at least taken into count, if they were to do a postmortem or so. That’s my job here on this blog. To share some ideas right? Yet, lets move on why aattam 100 vagai is a disgrace to the Indian community if it is to continue as it is today. 1. Why is the show portraying Indians in a very dodgy manner ? What’s with the slangs and reggae culture? Can’t that be prevented. Modernization is what we need, but what’s portrayed here are not what modernization actually suppose to be. It feels rather dodgy. It may lead people into a wrong culture guys. Keep classy. That’s what we need. 2. Costumes - Why are you making the participants look like clowns? Can’t the team arrange some sort of guidelines to show some sort of classiness? What’s with the striking colours. Do you provide such colour codes? Simple, have a...

"Buy Malaysian" campaign...????

Did you know that Abdullah Badawi launched the "Buy Malaysian" campaign on January 16th? I didn't. Maybe it's because I have switched off to everything that our prime minister says or does these days. But he did la. Buy Malaysian only because it saves you money. It is good for the economy and helps Malaysia weather the current global financial crisis. In other words it is our patriotic duty la. Okay. So, the questions for members of the Malaysian cabinet and other Barisan Nasional leaders are:- What car do you drive to work in? Proton? Mercedes-Benz? What suits do you wear to official functions? Italian? Saville Row? Chong's Tailoring Shop? Where do your children attend school and university? Cheras? Chelsea? Kedah? Melbourne? Where do you holiday? Genting? Pedas Hot Springs? London? Paris? mention the expensive watches they wear. One Patek Phillip is worth more than ten tons of local bananas/pineapples. LOL You flers come out and tell us la that you've change...
